St. Martin's in the Fields, London, UK

Description

At the east end of St Martin-in-the-Fields, the great window floods the sanctuary with shifting light, its modern design a striking counterpoint to the church’s 18th-century Georgian symmetry. Installed in 2008, the abstract glass by artist Shirazeh Houshiary evokes rippling water and fractured light rather than traditional stained scenes, inviting quiet reflection rather than narrative. Beneath the white columns and barrel-vaulted ceiling, the window becomes a luminous focal point, drawing the eye toward the altar. In this blend of old and new, the sanctuary feels both timeless and contemporary, a space where history and modern faith share the same frame.
