Cathedral Caverns

Cathedral Caverns State Park is a 493-acre public recreation area tucked away in the picturesque Kennamer Cove, Alabama! This hidden gem is a treasure trove of natural wonder. Originally named Bats Cave, it transformed into a captivating tourist destination in the 1950s, earned its National Natural Landmark designation in 1972, and was designated as an Alabama state park in 2000. A karst cave (usually formed in a soluble rock like limestone), it boasts a 3-acre forest of stalagmites! The wheelchair-accessible walkways cover approximately 3,500 feet. For the more adventurous souls, experienced cavers can venture beyond the trails, which stretch across an impressive 11,000 feet. Highlights of the caverns include: a 25-foot-tall and 128-feet-wide entrance, the largest of any commercial cave; Goliath stalagmite, towering at 45 feet and 243 feet in circumference; A 32-foot-tall flowstone waterfall, and the incredible Big Room, which measures an expansive 792 feet long and 200 feet wide (large enough to fit the battleship USS Alabama).
