UK - Cotswolds: Lower Slaughter

Lower Slaughter is a village in the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire, England, located about 4 miles (6.4 km) southwest of Stow-on-the-Wold. It lies along both banks of the River Eye, which is crossed by two footbridges and also flows through its twin village, Upper Slaughter. At the western end of the village, there is a 19th-century water mill with an undershot waterwheel. The village features several stone footbridges connecting its two sides. Most of the homes from the 16th and 17th centuries are built from Cotswold limestone and adorned with mullioned windows and projecting gables. The name "Lower Slaughter" comes from the Old English word "slough," meaning "wet land." The village has been inhabited for over 1,000 years and is mentioned as "Sclostre" in the Domesday Book of 1086, indicating it was under the sheriff's control in both 1066 and 1086.
